A Legacy of Faith and Service
The roots of Sunday School in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church trace back to the spiritual revival and youth awakening of the early 20th century. It was in 1936 that young believers, inspired by the teachings of the Church and nurtured in the environment of Holy Trinity Cathedral School, took the initiative to organize themselves under the banner of a youth fellowship called the Trinity Association—initially for male youth. Not long after, recognizing the spiritual hunger and dedication of young women attending the cathedral, a separate fellowship for female youth was established under the name Kirstos Association.
These early associations were founded not only to deepen the participant’s understanding of Orthodox doctrine but also to promote Christian service, preserve spiritual and national culture, and encourage public witness among the youth. Female members, in particular, began learning and performing traditional church hymns (Mezmur), inspiring many churches to support and replicate such efforts
As interest grew and participation expanded, the need for structured Sunday School programs became clear. This gave birth to the well-known Temero Mastemar Sunday School in 1939, which became a model for youth-led spiritual education throughout the country. In the following years, major churches such as Holy Trinity, Taeka Negest Bata Lemariam, St. Gabriel, and Menagesha St. Giorgis established similar programs. By 1942, Sunday Schools had become a formal component of the Church’s spiritual education, supported by institutions like the Trinity Theological College and the Gospel Messengers association.
With time, the movement matured. What began as small, youth-led groups grew into a national network of Sunday Schools recognized and supported by clergy, bishops, and the Holy Synod. By 1965, a central department was formed to coordinate and expand Sunday School activities across Ethiopia. Despite the challenges of political upheaval during the Dreg regime, the youth maintained their commitment to the Church’s mission, demonstrating courage and conviction that strengthened the Church’s witness during a dark time.
Carrying the Legacy Forward in Canada
This same spirit of devotion and service accelerated itself in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Eastern Diocese of Canada. As children of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church living in the diaspora, we stand on the foundation laid by those faithful youth who came before us. The Sunday School here in Canada builds on their legacy, striving to raise a generation rooted in Orthodox doctrine, dedicated to the Church’s mission, and equipped to serve both the Church and society. Through regular Bible study, hymn instruction, spiritual education, and community service, our Sunday Schools provide a nurturing environment for young believers to grow in the knowledge and love of God. Just as in the early days of the Church’s renewal in Ethiopia, Sunday School in Canada remains a vital part of preserving our Orthodox faith and identity for future generations.
